Fr. Eugene Buechel, S.J., second from left, traveled to Fort Thompson on the Crow Creek Reservation for the “Little Congress,” July 17- 22, 1924. The “Little Congress” served people who could not travel the long distance to the annual Catholic Sioux Congress. Two photographs showing Fr. Buechel were taken at the Little Congress on July 20 by Mrs. Dog. Fr. Sylvester Eisenman, O.S.B., is standing fifth from left. Fr. Justin Snyder, O.S.B., pastor at Crow Creek, is sixth from left. Several hundred people attended the 1924 Little Congress where Fr. Eugene Buechel, S.J., second from left, said Mass, administered sacraments, visited the sick, preached at High Mass, attended meetings and translated the sermon of Bishop Bernard J. Mahoney, Dakota Wambli, of the Sioux Falls, S.D. Diocese. St. Francis Mission catechists Jacob La Pointe and Bill Randall, not pictured, attended the “Little Congress” with Fr. Buechel. The catechists earned public praise for their work of helping priests instruct people for the sacrament of confirmation. This photo was taken July 20 by Mrs. Dog. Sources: Fr. Speaking Lakota Seen with a Franciscan in this undated photograph, Fr. Eugene Buechel, S.J. was assigned to Holy Rosary Mission on the Pine Ridge, S.D. reservation as a teacher in 1907. The following year, he was made superior, a position he held for eight years. His service to the Lakota people on Pine Ridge and Rosebud Reservations continued until his death on Oct. 27, 1954. Fr. Buechel learned the Lakota language during the early years. An August 1909 entry in his diary describes how he instructed, baptized and gave Extreme Unction (now called Anointing the Sick) to an elderly couple at American Horse Creek on Pine Ridge. It was his first attempt to explain certain teachings in the Lakota language. “…It went well enough, I believe,” he wrote. Sources: Eugene Buechel, S.J. Diary; Aug. 27, 1909. Fr. Eugene Buechel, S.J., leans on a car outside Immaculate Conception Church at Two Strike, S.D., in this undated photo. The church was built in 1927. Fr. Buechel made frequent diary entries about the perils of winter travel to his mission stations on Rosebud and Pine Ridge reservations, particularly after automobiles became available. An early example is March 5, 1917, when catechist Jake La Pointe drove Fr. Buechel to the Okreek mission station on Rosebud reservation. La Pointe’s auto “could not make a hill” on a muddy road. Fr. Buechel walked to the nearest farm for a team of horses to help them along. As they prepared to leave Okreek the next day, “a blizzard announced itself. We left for home anyhow – to make one of the worst trips I ever had.” Extreme weather conditions, undeveloped roads and less-than-reliable cars were a daily challenge for missionaries and catechists for decades. Fr. Eugene Buechel, S.J., sixth from left, appears with some of the many participants in the July 15-18, 1935, Catholic Sioux Congress at St. Michael’s Indian Mission near Fort Totten, N.D. The Rev. Leo Durkin, of the Diocese of Sioux Falls, S.D., is at Fr. Buechel’s right. Art Neibauer, who worked for many years at St. Michael’s, is fourth from the right. Other people in the photograph are unidentified
Fr. Damien Preske, O.S.B., invited Fr. Buechel to the Congress at St. Michael’s where Fr. Buechel delivered talks and sermons before large crowds. He also participated in informal discussions with small groups and individuals. He wrote about the experience in his diary, noting the warmth and humor of the people. He also noted curious differences in word meanings from those of the people he served on the Rosebud and Pine Ridge reservations. Fr. Buechel attended the Congress with Fr. Stephen E. McNamara, S.J., of St. Francis Mission. They arrived home at 6 p.m. July 19 “with the feeling that this was a perfect trip and that we had had a glorious time that we shall not forget.” This link to The Indian Sentinel shows Fr. Eugene Buechel, S.J., with Benedictine priests, including Fr.
