Less than a year after this June 1937 photo was taken at St. Francis Mission on Rosebud reservation (S.D.), Marilyn, Nancy and Robert Runte and their parents, Clarence and Ann, welcomed Fr. Eugene Buechel, S.J. to their Waukesha, Wis., home. Clarence Runte was Fr. Buechel’s cousin. The visit was part of a trip, from April 15 to May 8, 1938, that took Fr. Buechel to New York and New Jersey, then on to the Milwaukee area, Kansas City, Mo., and Omaha. Fr. Buechel arrived in Milwaukee on April 27, 1938, by way of Chicago on the Chicago-Milwaukee-St. Paul Railroad. He wrote about the week-long Wisconsin stay in his diary, noting memorable times with family and friends, and also a visit to the parents of Fr. M. A. Connell, S.J., Superior of St. Francis Mission. The Runtes hosted a “grand reception” for Fr. Buechel on April 30, 1938, and another family gathering the following day. Source: Fr. Eugene Buechel, S.J. diary; April 15 to May 8, 1938.

Clarence Runte and his children, Nancy (seated), Marilyn and Robert, are seen with Fr. Eugene Buechel, S.J., in this June 1937 photograph taken during a Runte family visit at St. Francis Mission on the Rosebud reservation (S.D.) Clarence was Fr. Buechel’s cousin. Clarence’s business, Badger State Dental Laboratory, in Waukesha, Wis., was one of Fr. Buechel’s many stops during his visit with family and friends in the Milwaukee area, April 27 to May 4, 1938. In his diary, Fr. Buechel listed people to whom he would send letters or gifts to express gratitude for the Wisconsin visit. Among the gifts was a “beaded prayer book” for Marilyn Runte and “moccasins” for Eugene Buechel, son of relative William Buechel. “Deo gratias maximus for all the many favors received so far,” was Fr. Buechel’s diary entry for May 4, 1938, the day he left family and friends in Milwaukee and traveled by train to Kansas City, Mo., where he arrived the next morning. Source: Fr. Eugene Buechel, S.J. diary; April 27 to May 8, 1938.
