Beckmann, Bishop of the Diocese of Lincoln, Neb., at the 27th Annual Sioux Catholic Congress, July 11-13, 1924, at St. Francis Mission on Rosebud Reservation. Bishop Beckmann’s address at the Congress was translated into the Lakota language by Fr. Buechel. The Lakota people conferred on Bishop Beckmann the name Wambli Nah-wic-aki-cij-in, Defending Eagle. Fr. Buechel was know to the Lakota people as Wanbli Sapa, Black Eagle.
